What to do in San Francisco?
Golden Gate Bridge: Gem of the City
A Wonder of the Modern World, the Golden Gate Bridge is a great American icon. It stretches mystically across the water for 3 miles, surrounded by contrasts of lush nature and pulsing cityscape. Hued in an unforgettable rusty red, the bridge is recognizable from both near and far. Whether shrouded in mist or glistening on a crisp sunny day, the Golden Gate is the beauty of the Bay.
Alcatraz: An Ominous History
The notorious prison of Alcatraz was a maximum high-security federal prison, and once considered the toughest prison in America. It was notorious for being impossible to escape from, though many attempts were made. Today tours of the abandoned prison detail stories that sound like they are straight out of a movie. The rest of the island, reachable by ferry, is also a popular recreation area, making for an excellent day out.
Fisherman's Wharf: Waterside Hustle and Bustle
Fisherman's Wharf has been a staple of the San Francisco Waterfront since the 19th century. Italian immigrant families found success fishing in these waters, which are still frequented by fishermen today. This northern part of present-day Little Italy, however, has been greatly modernized. The USS Pampanito is a popular submarine museum, and the Pier 39 Concourse is host to good eats and shopping.
