The unique cathedral building forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site,bringing together seven examples of architect Antoni Gaudi's work.Although today he is closely identified with the cathedral,Gaudi did not work on the project from the start,instead taking over in 1883 when building was underway.He made radical changes in the overall design,imposing an Art Nouveau sensibility on the building.The Nativity façade,looking out over Carrer Marina,is the only one completed before Gaudi's death in 1926.
Plaça Reial is a picturesque square situated just off La Rambla.The square offers you a relaxing spot to have a coffee or a bite to eat and just take in the atmosphere.The square has a beautiful fountain in the centre and some fine restaurants and bars.There are also two large,distinctive lamposts in this square which were designed by Gaudíand represent some of his first commissioned works.At the foot of each the lamposts you will see a plaque that identifies them.
