A little preparation and common sense goes a long way when it comes to not getting lost in a new area, but if it happens anyway, start by staying calm.
Preston suggests carrying a mirror(along with your map and a compass)when hiking,or something else shiny that you can flash around and create a glare for people to potentially find you should you get cut off from your group. You can also help orient yourself if you can determine your direction. In the eastern United States, rivers generally flow south or east.Researching the direction of the rivers in the area you're camping can help you find your direction while camping.
If there is moss on nearby trees,it will be on the north side if you're in the northern hemisphere, and the south side if you're in the southern hemisphere.
It also bears repeating—someone should have a general idea of where you will be at all times.
“If you’ll be traveling alone, tell people ahead of time your route and where you plan to be on certain days, that way people are on the lookout for you,”he said.
The risk of dehydration should be taken very seriously.Thirst is the first sign of dehydration,so if you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already behind in the water your body needs.
Dark urine, weariness, headaches, eye aches and dizziness are all additional signs of dehydration. In terms of how much water you should be drinking to avoid dehydration before and during strenuous activities, follow these tips:
Drink 15 to 20 ounces of water one to two hours before starting anything strenuous
Drink 8 to 10 ounces approximately 15 minutes before beginning your exercise
During your hike or other activity, try to drink about 8 ounces of water every 15 minutes or so
Everyone will have different needs when it comes to staying hydrated(how much you sweat, for example, will be a factor),but as long as you try to maintain a schedule close to the one above, you should be able to avoid any serious side effects from dehydration.
Beware of dizzying heights
Whenever you’re hiking or climbing in an area that’s higher altitude than you’re used to,the higher elevation can have unexpected effects.
Acute altitude sickness—the kind that comes with headache, loss of appetite, nausea, insomnia and unusual weariness—tends to only kick in at about 8,000 feet or higher, said Preston.
