Hotels anywhere between the Royal Palace and Retiro Park, an area that includes both Plaza Mayor and Plaza Porto del Sol, are convenient for sightseeing. Most major tourist attractions lie in these neighborhoods, with the greatest concentration of art museums along Paseo del Prado, the famed Mile of Art, paralleling Retiro Park. These highly-rated hotels in Madrid are all in this central area:
Catalonia Las Cortes is between plaza Mayor and the Prado art museum and offers free snacks throughout the day, good for those not accustomed to Madrid's late dining hours. Hotel Atlantico, on Gran Via in the heart of the shopping district and an easy walk from all the major attractions, has a rooftop terrace and offers free airport pick-up. The Westin Palace Madrid occupies an elegant Belle Epoch building on Paseo del Prado opposite the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, a five-minute walk to the Prado.
Ibis Styles Madrid Prado has comfortable, basic rooms, some with balconies, near Paseo del Prado. NH Madrid Nacional is opposite the botanic gardens on Paseo del Prado, near the Atocha rail station. Artrip Hotel gets raves for its large modern rooms and boutique atmosphere, although it's somewhat south of the center and a 10-minute walk from the Reina Sofia Museum and Atocha station.
Between the Royal Palace and Puerta del Sol, Hotel Francisco I is on a no-traffic street amid shops and restaurants. Room Mate Mario, also near the palace and Gran Via shopping, is chic and modern with its cutting-edge design.
