An insider's guide to Rome, featuring the city's best Michelin-starred restaurants, trattorias, takeaway pizza joints, and gelato bars, in locations throughout the Eternal City including near the Vatican and Colosseum. Expert guide to Rome, best Rome resturants worth you try:
The original All'Oro was a tiny but very buzzy gourmet restaurant in the Parioli district. In 2013, chef Riccardo di Giacinto upped sticks to the First Luxury Art Hotel in the centro storico, but the setting lacked the kind of intimate atmosphere his brand of intricate contemporary Italian cuisine demands. Fast forward to March 2017, when Di Giacinto and his wife Ramona finally opened a restaurant worthy of their ambitions in an Art-Deco-era villa in the upcoming Flaminio district, 5 minutes' walk from Piazza del Popolo. In the restaurant's rather subterranean, nightclubby interior, in the basement of the villa – or, in fine weather, on an airy veranda – Di Giacinto serves up inventive and sometimes playful tweaks of the Roman tradition.
He's a master of culinary camouflage - one of his signature dishes is coda alla vaccinara (oxtail) dressed up to look like a Ferrero Rocher bonbon. Sommelier Stefano Magistri is an able guide to some of Italy's lesser-known quality producers. The four-different tasting menus (one of them Vegan) offer substantial savings on à la carte prices; All'Oro newcomers are advised to try the 6-course All'Origine menu (€98), a compilation of the chef's 'greatest hits'. The ground and upper floors of the villa are given over to the 14-room H'All, a fresh, artsy design hotel that makes for a good Rome base, especially for those arriving by car - the hotel has a few free parking spaces, a rarity in the city.
