The best way to get around Salt Lake City is by public transportation and with a car. Follow our travel guides to drive from Salt Lake city to Yellowstone easily. The Utah Transit Authority offers several affordable transit options for exploring the city. However, if you're looking to get out of town to the nearby ski and wilderness areas, you will need your own set of wheels. You can rent a car in town or at the Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), which is located about 6 miles west of downtown.
How to Getting Around Salt Lake City?
Public bus and light rail (TRAX) routes are operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). Within the downtown area, UTA allows passengers ride both the bus and the train as often as they like without paying a cent: This "free fare zone" is bounded by the State Capitol to the north, 200th Street to the east, 500th Street to the south and Salt Lake Central Station to the west.
The fare is reasonably priced outside that area: One-way rides cost $2.50 and day passes cost $6.25. Buses and trains operate throughout the week with service starting between 5 and 6 a.m. and ending around midnight, depending on the route. However, you should plan for limited service on Sundays.
Unless you plan on spending your entire vacation downtown, you'll want a car. In fact, a vehicle is necessary to access the nearby ski slopes in Park City and wilderness areas like the Wasatch National Forest. You'll find that driving around town is fairly easy thanks to the city's grid layout and ample parking places.
You can rent a car at the airport or at several locations in the downtown area. If you'd rather let someone else do the driving, there are several cab companies in the Salt Lake City area. Smartphone apps like Lyft and Uber also service SLC.
